Douglas Bader is the RAF pilot who had both legs amputated after a flying accident but went on to fight in the Battle of Britain. He ended WW2 as a Group Captain. 5 "kills" is the standard requirement to be considered an "ace".

Then of course is always Eddie Rickenbacker...the American ACE.

The Red Baron had 80 'kills' shall we say...He was given a moment of silence (or the equivalent of the same at the time) by both sides.

P.S. Billy won the Victoria Cross & is credited with 72 air victories (compared to Eddie's 26).
