there seems to be a progressive method to becoming a saint in th Catholic Church. I believe they become "Blessed" before becoming saints.

ChampionNymph37634, It's the only chance a female has to have any influence on the faithful. And I never really got this intercessory thing - if the Almighty is all knowing why does a saint need to tell him anything ?

Canonization is the act by which the Roman Catholic Church declares that a person who has died is a saint, upon which declaration the person is included in the list of recognized saints, called the "canon." Once these "saints" are "canonized", Roman Catholics are ecouraged to pray to them.

The notion of angels, saints, cardinals, bishops, deacons, priests, or whatever, suggests a sort of social hierarchy within a religious body such as the Catholic Church & others. Whether or not that's a good thing sorta puzzles me. I'm not sure what to think about it. Any comments?

Timoteo, So what happened to all the prayers made to Saint Christopher before he was de-canonized? Was he unable to answer them? Did God ignore his intercession?

After death, there are four stages to becoming a Saint. First, you become a Servant of God, then you become Venerable, then Blessed and finally you're declared a Saint.

In truth, the only person whom we are sure is in heaven is the "good thief" who died on the cross next to Jesus. Jesus said to him, "This day you shall be with me in paradise".

A saint is anyone who is in heaven. Therefore, there are an innumerable amount of saints in existence. A canonized saint is a person formally recognized by the Church, by virtue of their life's work and holiness to be in heaven.
