I know that I have a fear of heights but what amazed me was my ability to actually overcome it and become an Air Assault soldier, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). For whatever reason my knees would literally knock as I waited for my opportunity to repell off of the 32 foot tower. It wasn’t an issue to repell 90 feet out of a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter.

I was on the top of World Trade building when it started to sway in the wind . I was terrified. The building which my husband and cousin helped erect was built to sway with the wind.

Using Acrophobia as fear of heights in English is a misinterpretation of the Greek word, Acrophobia is a Greek word and it actually means fear of the edge and not the height while the word hypsophobia means fear of heights.

May 8, 2018 Tuesday This is a very good word to learn and know. It teaches you words, that you probably didn't know it know about. People need to sit down and read the dictionary. You would be amazed at the words that are awake and used quite ofthen.

Player #3933295, nothing is "wrong actually". English words with Greek roots including medical terminology, do not use Modern Greek definitions but those found in Classic Greek... although you don't seem to know either. The root of acrophobia is the Greek work "acros" (άκρος) or "acron" (άκρον) which historically meant peak, apex, top, or upper. That is why when each Greek city was founded, they would first built an acropolis or "upper city" on its highest hill... not on ledges.

Delta_Fox56, I'm sorry people please disregard my poor reply skills, I'm 63, & learning! Back to the phobia, I stand on a chair & my balance goes out the window. I attribute it to a) overweight; b) inner ear infection at age 19; c) the fear of falling...I wake up at least once or twice a year from nightmares if falling. At least I wake up, I was told that if you hit, you won't wake up!

vech2018, that explains things. I am not afraid of any height if I can't fall but I can't climb a ladder without an irrational fear of falling 4 feet

I have this fear! As an Executive Assistant, I had to fly, mind you after 911, from CT to CO to train other Assistants on a new computer system. Extremely scared, but fought through it with prescription meds. I still don’t like flying and taking elevator rides but I’ve gotten better.

From the Greek words "phobia" meaning fear and "acro" meaning edge. The same with "klepto" meaning stealing and "cyno" meaning dog.

I don't have a fear of heights ( I like roller coasters, I've been skydiving, etc) but when I look at the pictures of the men that built the empire state building just hanging out on a thin piece of metal hundreds of feet up just calmly eating their lunch like their sitting at McDonald's I get woozy. I would have been terrified when my husband left for work each morning if I was one of their wives😆

I have a theory that people with acrophobia also suffers from vertigo brought on by motion sickness. have read many stories in which the character suffers from fear of height and getting motion sickness at a later stage in the story. I suffer with both, motion sickness so bad I can ride on a swing or any rides at a fairground.😖

Delta_Fox56, That's actually not unusual. A fear of heights is not the same thing as fear of falling. when you have an real fear of heights you want to GET DOWN. A fear of falling makes you want to desperately hold on. This is how it was explained to me by my doctor.
