Player #28262406, during the depression many people basically survived on lard (pork fat) & dripping (beef fat), usually served as a spread on bread.
My mother's family ate this, and little else, 4 days a week from 1930 until the start of WWII. They actually ate much better during the war, due to the rationing of food.
BTW the term Larder (equivalent to Pantry) is based on it being the place Lard was stored.

Old Fool, the Depression wasp well before my time but I recall eating lard sandwiches as a child as a choice, not due to poverty.
