FourteenTube4, last time there was a question about the Olympic rings, the answer was that they represented the colors of the flags of the countries that competed in the first modern Olympics. Please!!! Somebody get their facts together!!!!

Totally wrong question. The colours represent all the flags in the world: there is no flag, anywhere, that is not represented by at least one of the Olympic colours.

I thought the colours were to represent all the flags of the world and that no one ring was specific to a particular continent.

As can be read in the Olympic Charter, the Olympic symbol represents the union of the "five continents" of the world and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games. However, no continent is represented by any specific ring. The 1949–50 edition of the IOC's "Green Booklet" stated that each colour corresponded to a particular continent: blue for Europe, yellow for Asia, black for Africa, green for Australia and Oceania, and red for the Americas. This assertion was "cancelled" in 1951 because there was no evidence that Coubertin had intended it: "at the very most he might perhaps have admitted it afterwards".

The founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin stated the following in the August 1913 edition of Olympique ... the six colours [including the flag's white background] combined in this way reproduce the colours of every country without exception. The blue and yellow of Sweden, the blue and white of Greece, the tricolour flags of France, United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Belgium, Italy and Hungary, and the yellow and red of Spain are included, as are the innovative flags of Brazil and Australia, and those of ancient Japan and modern China. This, truly, is an international emblem.

I read once that every country that competes has at least one of the colours of the rings in their flag. Never heard of them representing continents.

Each ring in the 16 prints symbolizes one of the five continents competing at the Olympics: Africa (yellow), the Americas (red), Asia (green), Europe (black), and Oceania (blue).
