It's deemed unlucky because its the quickest of shakespears plays, which meant that the touring group were about to have their run ended by poor turnout, they would put on the cheapest and quickest to end the run before closing the company tour. Basically it meant you were about to be unemployed.. Hence it became bad luck.

Thunderduck, the rule about whistling is because theatres used to hire sailors from the nearby docks to be gaffers. Sailors communicated with each other aboard ship with different whistles and no one wanted things to go wrong because a sailor/gaffer interpreted a whistle as a stage direction!
