Where did the art of snake charming originate?

I don't like snakes even if they're charmed!

As in the picture, cobras are the snake of choice for most "charmers". You can bet that they don't employ the spitting variety.

Never charmed a snake but I have hypnotized a chicken, my kids loved it.

Those snakes teeth has been removed and make them like slaves later on to listen to the noise of flutes etc. I feel sorry for the poor animals. I don't see why in this modern era, we need to have snake charmers.
