Dizzy, You got me curious. My father was a Canadian Mennonite, originally from Russia. I have a Mennonite cookbook that does contain recipes for these cookies. I don't recall his mom or sisters making them, but my grandmother was famous for her ammonia cookies. They were soft white cookies and SO GOOD. Since you cannot find cooking ammonia anymore I guess you could use peppermint extract instead.

DSDA, Ammonia cookies! Swoon! My Mennonite grandmother used to make them. She lived next door to us and I used to go begging for cookies from her all the time. My parents would allow me to go begging, but made darn sure I also offered Grandma a "danke shoen" when I got the cookies.

My grandmother made Pfeffernusse (pepper nuts) every year. Her recipe calls for black pepper along with other spices. My dad loved them. I don't care for them, preferring springerles instead.

DSDA, try googling cooking ammonia. What I found is that it was replaced with baking soda or baking powder, but it's also available for sale.

I make these wonderful little treats at Christmas. They are very tasty. Not as sweet as most cookies & have a distinctive flavor with molasses & cardamom.

I am a Mennonite in the United States and never heard of these cookies. And my Dad is very German whose first language was PA Dutch, a dialect of German. Interesting.
