It's hard to think of Ned Beatty without thinking of "that scene." I don't know if it was a first. Women being raped has been depicted or implied in films, probably since the early days. Men, not so much.

j hope, That reminds me. I think I saw it at the drive-in too, though I was probably 18-19. It never occurred to me that more lax admission policies would have allowed little kids to see films like that. Sorry for your premature exposure to it.
