Pete, Its really violent to watch and would never want to be in the middle of it. Just gives people a reason to hurt each other.

I stayed away from Punk Rock because of the antics that took place in "the pit", as I felt I would wind up brawling with someone over the antics that took place there. I had friends that would fight during the shows, and some that were singers in the bands. Punk Rock was huge in California in the 70's and beyond.
