What is an infection of bone called?

This can be very serious and debilitating. My hairdresser had this in her hip and it was difficult to heal. She ended up selling her shop because her could not stand. Her bone literally disintegrated from the infection. Her leg wound was kept open with the antibiotics laying in the wound.
