davy, We would have still had Canada between us. ICBMs, especially submarine launched ones eventually made proximity much less relevant.

I know this because I was recently given a fridge magnet from a friend who visited Alaska. It reads 1959. However I believe Hawaii was also 1959 but after Alaska.

Barb@71, Yes it was, but that was a time Russia could not manage Alaska by itself because you had to go through either by sea from Sea of Okhotsk to Alaska's coast or the Far East (Arctic-like conditions) Russia didn't have that technology/capabilities to manage

Hawaii was in 1959 too!!
