How many basic tastes are there in the sensation of taste?

Bacon satisfies all of the taste sensations.

I hear about Umami on all the food shows now. I'd never heard of it until very recently and now it's everywhere

Player #3865893, taste is different to flavours, there are many flavours, but our taste buds are programmed with the 5 levels of sensation to determine, what it is ie salty, sweet, savoury etc

Obviously, other factors such as texture and appearance are also important when it comes to eating, but it is worth mentioning in particular the importance of smell. A great deal of flavour is conveyed by the sense of smell. Indeed, taste is a relatively primitive sense on its own, but combined with smell, the full flavour sensation comes out.

I had a Pakistani friend who could put a whole decent-sized green chilli, complete with seeds, in her mouth and chew it without even wincing! It wold have killed me! She once gave me a curry, which she was making for her family and after chewing the first mouthful, I felt as though I just couldn't possibly survive it!

interestingly, there are 6 basic tastes as per Ayurveda sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy and astringent. Ayurveda also defines how the body reacts to each taste

Bacon! that is considered a fat taste. Fat taste is now conidered to become a 6th taste. I don't know if it is official yet.
