Jasper James III, The classification of giant pandas is an interesting thing. For a long time scientists argued it was either a member of the Ursidae family or the Procyonidae family (bears and raccoons), but they are most definitely not marsupials. Marsupials are defined as species falling under the infraclass of Marsupialia, which contains neither Ursidae nor Procyonidae. Marsupials have a number of defining characteristics, most notably they give birth to underdeveloped young and raise them in pouches (note all bears give bears to underdeveloped (altricial) young, via the Smithsonian Institute, but pandas and other bears do not raise their young in pouches). Pandas and most mammals are what's called placental mammals. Back to the classification of pandas; genetic analysis now tells us that pandas, genetically at least, are more similar to bears than raccoons. In terms of taxonomy, pandas belong to the Ursidae family but fall into a separate genus than other bear species.

There is a discrepancy among zoologists about whether a panda is a bear or a raccoon, so having bear as an option was perhaps not a great idea.

I did believe that they were marsupials, thank you for you knowledgeable comment! my favorite fact about pandas 🐼 is that they are black white and asian! so they are not racist, I love this fact as i have interracial children and I love all races of people and animals. this game is absolutely awesome too! 🙂💛🙏
