Because it was connected with Catholicism, Britain (including its American colonies) did not adopt the Gregorian Calendar until 1752. By then, the calendar adjustment required dropping 11 days. Wednesday, September 2, was followed by Thursday, September 14. People, including Dr. Samuel Johnson and George Washington, adjusted their birthdays. There were public demonstrations against the “popish plot” with angry mobs crying, “Give us back our eleven days.”

The are two significant parts to the change of calendar: firstly that New Year became standardised as 1st January and secondly that years divisible by 100 (except those divisible by 400) are not leap years. So 1700, 1800, 1900 & 2100 are not leap years but 1600 & 2000 are.
