The most important factor in the rescue was the ship - the Ile-de-France - whose Captain took her close to the sinking ship, creating a smooth sea so that the lifeboats could work better. The other shameful thing was the picture was of the Stockholm in NY Harbour, with her rails lined with a LOT of the Andrea Doria's crew who got off before their passengers!!
