The for-profit prisons must go! Their only incentive is to makes as much $$$ as they can for themselves and shareholders. Inmates are treated as assets, not humans. We've allowed the a system that should never be privatized to see inmates only as a bottom line. It's obscene.

Ginger, I worked in the prison system for 11 years and the inmate was offered all you mentioned. I was a teacher. While incarcerated they are model citizens. They work but not hard labor and everything is given to them. When they are released, they have to take care of themselves and many don’t like to do that. There is no one right answer.

Uninitialized, Not that, the other country's don't have issues with killing offenders. It's a lot more cost effective than jail, plus it cuts down on recidivism.

Here's the deal - impoverished areas are the elementary schools for criminals. Next comes juvenile detention facilities - the secondary schools for criminals. Finally, there's prison. The higher education & grad school for criminals. The answer is stop the vicious cycle where it starts - impoverished areas. Get rid of those & lower crime rates will follow. How do we do that? I don't know. I just know that's what it will take.

1 thing Americans don't seem to get is we jail thieves. Iraq, Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan,Saudi Arabia, Turkey, just to name a few have a very swift judicial system when it comes to thieves.They chop off the offending hand.

Most people that we have in jails are enforce drug charges plus other crimes. We have a high population, because most other countries, execute drug dealers and users.

Frances60, this is called institutionalisation, so if you'd only been a prisoner just a few years, of things being handed to you, it's unlikely you wouldn't cope with having to suddenly compete in the job market, to be sure an uneven playing field, especially if you'd just come out of jail..

As a ex offender in both federal and state prisons, I have my own opinions. Most of the folks here who talk about "kill em all" neither care about saving an economy nor the betterment of society. They are merely miscreants themselves who have yet to be convicted. themselves

Do you know that not all that are imprisoned have done the crime, many have been falsely convicted. So many have undiagnosed mental illness as well. The black, brown and poor man are endangered species.

Oliver Twist, The death penalty has failed as a overall deterrent. It only ensures that the inmate put to death will not be a threat 10to the public again. It is not cost efficient. A criminal typically us imprisoned for 10 to 15 yrs, with costly appeals.
