My father fought in Vietnam. He told me he knew it was a lost cause when American GIs started asking to be seconded to Australian patrols because they had a much higher chance of survival.(Aussies prepared for a week beforehand-water only washing both clothes and body, eating local food, no dairy products and practising silent patrols.) Dad said you could usually hear a Yank patrol coming - talk and radios, and smell them - deodorants, bubblegum and weed.

what has always hurt me is how Vietnam veterans were treated when they came home. I'm glad to see that this has changed. it destroyed a lot of young men's lives that fought in that war.
