Your grandfather probably fought bravely as a soldier . The average German ( Deutsch) did not cause trouble for the World . It was a small number of evil people who believed their own propaganda.
I do not believe those of today should have to apologise for their forebears,
be it for Nazism , slavery, religion or Empire.
We should just live our lives to avoid repeating deeds or attitudes from outdated beliefs

Saying Germany started World War 2 in 1939 is a very Westernised view of what was a truly global conflict. If you ask people in Asia they could argue it started when Japan invaded Manchuria in 1937, a year after Germany and Japan had formed an alliance. Interestingly enough, although rarely mentioned the Axis Powers also included the Kingdom of Thailand
