What were the refugees who fled Vietnam by boat and ship after 1975 called?

my coworker is one of these Vietnamese boat people. he left in 1979 at age of 17. They were picked up by freighter from Netherlands. after living in Holland as refuge he made it to the USA. after 10 years he finally got his green card and just last month became a naturalized citizen. He was so happy. I'm proud to call him friend and fellow citizen. fascinating life story. he hates China. Loves America.

After the war I helped airlift Vietnamese refugees out of Thailand and flew them to the US for resettlement.

My father was a Vietnam war veteran. I always wondered why he so liked the Vietnamese people who came from a place that literally gave him nightmares until the boat people came to Australia. There were some initial prejudice and criminality issues as there were with aĺl migration waves into Australia but as I worked and shopped in the areas they settled I began to appreciate my father's appreciation. They have contributed to and become part of Australian culture and now I especially can't imagine life without banh mi .
