My ex-mother-in-law was an original Haight-Ashbury hippie, from before the mentioned convergence until after she had breakfast with Pigpen (Grateful Dead) the day he died. She was six months pregnant with my ex when she traveled east to attend Woodstock.

Player #24358685, I have a friend who told me of living in SF and hanging out at Haight- Ashbury at that time. I was so surprised to meet someone who actually experienced that and asked her a million questions. That era was one of a kind and will never be repeated.

Player #24358685, I was in San Francisco to pick up my husband returning from Vietnam. My girlfriend and I drove down from Tacoma Washington. we drove through Haight-Ashbury and locked our doors. my car had a military sticker on it. Nothing happened but we were nervous. Both our fathers were career Air Force.

I came to the Bay Area in '69 to go to school. The vibe was still there. Coming from a working class family in a southern military town it was a change, but a pleasant one. Except for a few people, you couldn't tell an heiress to an automotive fortune from anyone else. They weren't hardcore hippies, but the clothes, the music and the general laid back, welcoming spirit was common. Sadly, I don't know if the magical cultural confluence will happen again.

BruBru, I grew up in SoCal in the’60’s. There is a really good documentary about Laurel Canyon streaming online during that time period. Also one about the “Wrecking Crew “ who were the backing musicians for a lot of #1 hits during that time, online too.

Player #24358685, As a former Deadhead, all I can say is “Oh Wow!” This event was somewhat repeated at Garcia’s funeral at the Polo Grounds in Golden Gate Park, and I was there. I was a budding Flower Child in 1967. It was covered in ALL the major papers at that time.

Donna, I remember starting college in September 1967. we were wearing Neru shirts beads bell bottoms with fringe and listening to Bob Dylan and Jefferson airplane. it was a time of protest against the Vietnam War and changing the world in general. now looking back I see a little progress but still a long way to go. these days the gun violence is out of control. there needs to be change.
