Ktkk, It is good to honor the indigenous creatures, but they truly do make permanent physical changes when they decide to settle. We live on the edge of a system of ponds, creeks, etc. that feed into a river that eventually feeds into a larger river and eventually the Columbia River. Several years ago a beaver decided to build in one of the streams. Down stream the creek is muggy, the pools are breeding grounds for mosquitoes, well, you get the picture. Our home is part of a development, a typical encroachment of man disturbing nature. We dislike mosquitoes a lot and cannot use our backyard in late afternoon. But we agree that the beaver should not be disturbed. An age old conundrum.

The beaver is the national animal and a symbol of Canada. What the bald eagle is to Americans, that is what the beaver is to Canada.

The book “Eager” was the 2018 Outside Magazine Book of the Year. An outstanding read on this keystone species and the beaver’s impact on North America and the United States as we know it.
