How many formally accepted constellations are there?

Of course, in reality none of the constellations actually exist. What we see is the light of stars that are at vastly different distances from Earth, and therefore has taken vastly different amounts of time to reach us. The stars apparent positions are not their current positions and the actual physical arrangement of the stars is nothing like what we see.

The ancients had quite an imagination. Amazing how the mapped out the sky, then later used it to navigate. I'm lost without GPS nowadays
