there is a difference between ratification of a law and de facto recognition of it. Enslaved blacks in Texas were the last to be notified about Emancipation by the Union's army. Blacks in Mississippi knew they were free as evidenced by their gains politically during Reconstruction , and Mississippi's response was monstrous. Not only were Blacks stripped of their voting rights and other gains they had made, they were subjected to violence and intimidation by Mississippi whites that would be seen as crimes against humanity today. Texas is the reason for "Juneteenth " celebrations by all Blacks.

Nirvana girl Jade!, most Irish were indentured servants. they could typically work until a debt was paid and then be free. blacks had no debt until slavery was abolished. then many of the free ex slaves had to still work the plantations until they could earn enough to truly be free. many never did.

then for whatever reason Mississippi didn't notify the US archivist as required by law so the 1995 ratification wasn't made official until two interested citizens solved the issue in 2013. -- Ben Waldron, ABC News

gman, England took slaves to Europe and the Middle East before they brought them to America. Some European countries "reversed" slavery long before the US did. Denmark, for one, ended slavery sixty years before America did.

I always wonder about the people who tap the down arrow on a comment of truth. They surely are the reasons this country (United States) is in the trouble we are in. Sadly, they don’t recognize it.

Player #4874449, Thank you because I got it wrong I was raised knowing about Juneteenth. I never knew Mississippi had that going on but to be honest Mississippi is probably the worst state for Black's look at 2024 Jackson and their Jim Crow laws

From 1870's-1920's the convict leasing system was used that developed into the chain gangs that falsely imprisoned mostly black males and females to serve in the mines, turpentine forest, building railroads or working the farms (plantations). Usually people were taken for vagrancy, riding the train or having a weapon to defend themselves. 1 white man served time involving keeping others in servitude (peonage) from 1877- 1966 and he was found guilty of murder for 1 man not 12 that he had

I`m sad to say even in these times and days we still have slavery in the U.S.A. ,and other countries ,the type of slavery i`m talking about ensnared every race, nationality ,gender ,etc. It's economic slavery , financial slavery , etc. I was born and raised in the south and hate any kind of slavery , hate it as much as he'll itself .I pray everyone everywhere can be free of any type of slavery

Bad question: too clever by half. Slaves in MS knew they were free and TX is where Juneteenth originated, traditionally seen as the time the last slaves (in TX in 1865?) found out they were free.

Another fact every race were slaves at some point in time.Blacks were slaves of other blacks whites were slaves of other whites. only America was first in reversing this way of the world but only after tremendous loss of life in the civil war.It only seems to me that most people think America was the only country with slavery.
