Which root vegetable originated as a cross between the cabbage and the turnip?

Rutabaga are very strongsmelling when cooked and super hard. In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, they are an ingredient of pasties. Turnips are here too, but are quite bland tasting. So they are two different vegetables.
