When my dad and mom lived on Guam, my mom was riding a bus to the business out of the base. When she was done, she boarded the bus to go back to the base. 5 minutes later, the bus stopped and the doors opened to admit a man in a loincloth carrying a pole with his bayonet strapped to it. He wore a WW2 Japanese helmet and sat in the back. When they got the base, they stopped by security and the mp’s escorted the man to their office to be interviewed and interrogated. This was 1953. My family lived in a Quonset Hut with a wire screen overhead to catch lizards that dropped off from inside their ceiling. My mom also said she had a tub filled with water constantly in case my sister got into any army ant hills. Also, mines were very, very bad there. They always had a case of a child setting of a land mine. Bouncing Betty’s were the worst. You set them off, they go up 7 feet and boom! The air is full of shrapnel. Mom told me that my brother Bob had a friend that came over and wanted to know if he could play. She saw he was tossing something up and down. She asked if she could see this. He said sure. He gave it to her and it was a rusted pineapple grenade. The pin was almost gone. She knew if she held on to it, nothing would happen. She told Tommy to go get the MP’s and the bomb ordanance men. When they came, she gave them the grenade, and she asked Tommy to show her where he found it. He took them into the jungle., they found skeletons, ammunition, grenades, helmets.
