I would not just think about the threatening nature to enemy/opponent, it would do wonders to get the participants into the right mindset, or produce adrenaline.

The haka is a very cool thing to see. The maori people of New Zealand included my husband in the haka.

Love to watch a haka. A young woman began one in the NZ congress recently to protest a proposed new law that would harm her people. She was joined by many others. They met in the well of the room and it was a sight to see. Gave me chills.
