Ada46, The frame is wood. If you look closely you'll see where the leather is attached with metal 'staples' that look almost like a hinge. I have a large travel trunk very similar. Often inside, there are also box like inserts that stack inside on small ledges of fabric covered wood. It all depends on the size of the chest. Mine has the main compartment with 2 shallow, subdivided compartments on top.

Cautious me would think they might be haunted....
