In suits of armour, a gorget protected which part of the body?

During WW2 German Military Police wore a Gorget as a symbol of office. It was relatively small and offered little in the way of protection. They were referred to as "Head Hunters". During the later years of that War they gained a reputation for performing summary executions of deserters.
