In human anatomy, where is the approximate location of the submental space?

I'm still confused. Under the chin, not in, implies what is outside the body (air, chin strap, scarf), or could be said of one's chest. A swollen chin is not under itself. I would have thought submental would be just below the brain, as in sinus cavity of mouth.
