Sis, Thanks to the Oklahomans who migrated to California (Read John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath) if it were not for them; the Orange Packing Industry would not have not been a thriving business in the 30s. The people from the Dust Bowl were industrious, kind hearted people who worked cooperatively with the diverse ethnic groups. I like American history and I like how it seems that difficult such as the Dust Bowl, the Depression, etc. brought out the best in people.

I’ve heard that’s why certain individuals today turn their drinking glasses right side up or upside down. The upside down ones can be traced to the ancestors of the dust bowl.

I knew the history of the event but I have problems with numbers so dates don't stick with me. I never realized that my parents were born on either end of it, in 32 and 38. They lived in Kansas City so not involved, but still a weird feeling.

Cece, Yep, between that and smoke from burning Mexican fields, Texas, not to mention lax regulations that allow industry to pollute the air, make it difficult to breathe in Texas. My allergies are often bad and have been sneezing frequently for a week now.

Alws_Learning, From what I've read, many of the growers didn't even pay them enough to keep them fed by minimum calorie requirements. Children were often sick, no medical care, worked in the fields. There were strikes, but the growers and local law enforcement worked together to break that up, with violence sometimes

My father survived mostly on oatmeal during those years. Not much work of any kind was available. I've seen a family reunion picture from those years. A lot of people. but nobody looked a bit overweight. Very thin people.
