In which country was the "bocce" game first played?

Also referred to as "lawn bowling", there was a lawn bowling center in Hermosa Beach, CA, in the 70's and forward. Unless it was replaced without my knowledge, it still exists.

This game of Bocci is catching on in USA. My community is building one by our clubhouse!
