"Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was a song sung by American slaves. The words sound like any song of someone longing for deliverance to a better place. The slaves could sing it out loud, and only they knew the words were not about dying and going to heaven. The words, "I looked over Jordan and what did I see? I saw a band of angels coming after me," were a kind of code. "Jordan" in this song, is the Ohio River, and the "Band of Angels" was the Underground Railroad.
