Actually, everyone who knows anything about Newton knows for sure. The apple-on-the-head story is a total fabrication. The existence of gravity was well known in Newton's time and he certainly didn't need a falling apple to become aware of it. He did not discover gravity, but rather, the mathematical laws governing it, and it was the motion of the moon and planets, not falling apples, that led him to the discovery.
