In the late 30's Edward Mirror left Hershey Chocolate to join Forrest Mars. Their collaboration of a heat resistant candy resulted in M&M's. I know this because I retired from the Hershey Company years ago.

Smarties are candy coated chocolate, originally known as chocolate beans until 1937, which were invented in th UK in 1882.
original Smarties are not available in the USA, another company uses the same name there.
