In WWII, where was the treacherous maritime area often referred to as the 'Black Pit'?

Shortly before the war Nazi Germany signed a treaty agreeing not to use submarines against civilian ships, which is a war crime. Of course they violated that treaty on the first day of the war. We should remember our debt to the brave souls from many natiins who faced tremendous dangers and hardships to overcome the Nazi threat to humanity.
