I recently read a story that the Mali Empire flourished to such an extent that the Emperor is believed to have been the richest person who ever lived

Timbuktu is believed to be a seat of education and even had a university.

As I recall from the late 60's, Timbuktu was a word to describe a place far away from where you are/live. Another one was "Cucamonga". Then in 1972 my club soccer team had a game against "Rancho Cucamonga" here in California.
