I used bread as an eraser as a kid when I was desperate. Tis a bit messy though.

swish, I'm a professional conservator. You shouldn't use bread to clean a painting as it leaves residue on the paint and in the cracks which can cause the growth of mold which can release the paint from the sub straight.
