A finderscope is the common name for a device used in which branch of science?

My husband is an amateur astronomer. He's got a couple of nice finder scopes and a 12" "real" scope. He's also got a device that will take sequential photos on its own. He just sets it up and then supervises from inside. It worked a treat this past winter.
