In Christianity, what is penance?
Correct answer: Repentance of sins
Kat
The answer is wrong. Penance is "an act of self-abasement, a sacramental rite that consists of confession, absolution and penance directed by the confessor. An act of hardship or penalty compensating for the offense." More then just repentance, implying a penalty for the transgression.

This definition of penance sounds accurate, but it implies a human working to earn God's forgiveness. Repentance is turning away from sin to God and receiving His forgiveness. We cannot do anything to earn God's forgiveness, grace or salvation. It is a free gift.

Minkagal #28125873, I agree with you; but penance is most often a Catholic ritual.
