I grew up in Quebec & when I was little I. vividly remember a man tied to a chair in the back of a pickup truck, covered in what looked like molasses & feathers head to toe & it freaked me out & haunted me fo a very long time! Don’t like this & don’t think it’s Scottish. My Grandma & several relatives are from Scotland & have never heard of it going on there!

Christine and all other people saying they are Scottish or from Scotland, here's why:
The tradition of "blackening the bride and groom" is most commonly practiced in rural areas of northeast Scotland, particularly in regions like Aberdeenshire, Angus, and Fife. However, it can also be found in other parts of Scotland, especially in smaller towns and villages where older customs are more likely to persist.
The practice tends to vary slightly depending on the local community

I would have guessed Italy because this is similar to what Italian grooms went through in my neighbourhood. It’s all in good fun. Based on everyone’s comments, the right answer must be wrong. I’ve never heard of this as a Scottish thing either. 🤷🏻♀️

Andy, I totally agree and I'm Scottish. There can be regional traditions such as the bride to be being dressed up usually carrying a potty and is paraded through pubs and some punters put money in the potty for a wee kiss and the poor lassie is usually plied with booze. Also grooms have a a stag night and are plied with booze and generally teased but never ever are the couple tarred and feathered. People sometimes have misconceptions about Scottish people. We are not all haggis chasing redheads who live in caves.
