What was the the original purpose of the Louvre?

Perhaps an argument could be made that the 12th Century building was not the same building as what we refer to as the Louvre? Like the ship of Theseus or Trigger's broom in only fools and horses does there come a point where something that is rebuilt is no longer the same thing as the original?
