How do cows express their emotions?

So . . . I guess no moos is good moos.

Player #92723922, I have personally witnessed a mother cow crying tears when her calf was taken away. She was sad for sometime.

Of course you can tell happy moos, just as you can tell angry moos.

L, Last fall I was at a rural, truck stop type gas station. There was an entire herd of cows next door, very close in the dark, mooing loudly & constantly in great distress. I grew up on a dairy farm, have been near them all my life. I had never heard anything like this. It was heart-breaking. We asked about it & were told all their calves had been taken away that day.

L, how sad!!! There’s a strong bond between mother n baby even in the animal kingdom… I can’t imagine what the baby was going through!!

Each cow has a special friend within the herd. When the calves get taken the mothers will moo all day and night, calling for them. The heifers are usually kept to increase the herd.

Shelley, I have heard about what they do about dairy calves! So sad!

Of course she was upset over the loss of her baby!

I milked a Guernsey every morning and evening. She was a great cow! I cried like crazy when my parents sold her.

The same applies with other animals. Localization and body language reveal a lot. Same with humans.
