In which year did Australia host their first Summer Olympic Games?

I ran on the track at these Olympics. I was an active toddler and there was only a low picket fence in front of the spectators which I climbed and took off down the track. I was caught by an Indian competitor and when he returned methinks my mother he gave her his competitors badge which I have still.
