As a toddler I had my tonsils removed and I still remember the smell of ether to this day. It's no longer used, nor is any gas. Anesthetics are all intravenous now.

Really (C2H5)2O is called diethyl ether, as ethers are a class of compounds which consist of C & H on either side of an O. The active ingredient in marijuana is an ether in a ring formation!

I seem to remember reading that the Incas extracted teeth & placed gems in their place. So if that be true & I do believe there’s some evidence, it was a long time before 1846.
