What material was originally used to stiffen ladies’ corsets?

When I was a model in 1971 our modeling coach told us to wear a “foundation garment”; or, in other words a girdle. So, even that late in the last century women believed girdles were a necessary undergarments.

they wear them now. just called by a different name.
