I have never heard of this tradition, I wonder which European countries practise it?

What a neat idea! Couples today need all the luck that they get.

I attended a wedding the 90s in Suffolk, England at which a sweep appeared. I spoke with him and yes that was his job, and he also advertised his services for weddings.

Blacktulip23, I lived in Germany for three years, had German friends. It was never mentioned (1991-1994)
Donna
Didn't know this. My chimney guy arrives dressed to the nines when he comes and leaves the same way. Amazing!

Blacktulip23, the UK, Germany, most or the Balkan countries too. Of course nowadays we don't really invite them to our weddings as it was in the past, but it's still considered a good luck if see one and ask him to touch you. Unfortunatelly this profession has almost disappeared in the last 10 years.
