Maybe it's an age thing? I've known my whole life that a hobo is a migrant who hops trains. I grew up in the West and maybe those who are questioning this are in the East? Interesting.

This is incorrect. Hobos are usually homeless and rarely work. migrants work and have homes for all the family in the USA. They also travel when crops are in season.

They were known as Swaggies in Australia during and around the Great Depression. Men who wandered in rural areas looking for small jobs or handouts and toted their swag (a rolled up sleeping bag or blankets tied with a rope or leather belt that enabled it to be carried over the shoulder )It was known colloquially as a 'Matilda' hence the words of Australia's pseudo anthem Waltzing Matilda.

I have hear: during the great depression, unemployed people were bussed out of New York and New Jersey, for example Hoboken. So they were Hobos. I think this is right, but don't have a reference.
