What term best describes the exhaustion experienced from taking on the emotional burdens of a patient’s agony?

I couldn't help but think of all of the front line workers today. They have to devasted by all they've seen. I sincerely hope they get free therapy.

I've worked in occupational therapy at a nursing home for 14 years & the gradual medical decline of people I've grown to love doesn't affect me as dramatically as it used to. It's good to know there's a name for that other than "heartless".

This probably represents a fraction of what doctors, nurses and ambulance drivers must be feeling in Ghaza

I'm sure this is more serious now in 2020.
