What is the official language of the Vatican's Swiss Guard?

Saw those awesome uniforms up close and personal when my friend and I walked to very old, very large doors entering into Vatican City. As we got closer, they turned facing each other and lowered their swords blocking the doors. Chagrined, we quickly turned and walked away. 😏
